Museums in Europe: what challenges for the future?


From May 3 to 4, 2022, Meeting of directors of museums and administrations in charge of museum policy was held with the theme of “Museums in Europe: what challenges for the future?” to discuss the challenges and future for museums in Europe facing the influence on the museum sector by the pandemic. Major topics include: the role, value, and mission of museums; museums’ role in knowledge transmission, education and cause of public liberation; new cooperation models and mobility of museum professionals; challenges in tourism, sustainable development and public policy.

The meeting was held at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, raising discussions focusing on two major issues: “museums in Europe: strengths, weakness, perspectives of European museum models” and “what common projects for a Europe of museums after the crisis?”. Mr. David Vuillaume, President of the European Network of Museum Organisations (NEMO), Mr. Jean-François Chougnet, President of the Musée des Civilisations de l'Europe et de la Méditerranée (MUCEM) and Ms. Catherine Magnant, Head of the Culture Unit, European Commission (EU) attended the meeting.
