Jointly organized by the National Museum of China (NMC) and the International Alliance for the Protection of Heritage in Conflict Areas (ALIPH) , the exhibition Salvaged from the Shadows, Protecting Cultural Heritage was unveiled at the NMC on June 6, 2024.
The exhibition is organized into five sections: “A threatened heritage”, “ALIPH, action at the service of heritage”, “Prevention and healing”, “The women and men serving cultural heritage” and “Preserving the beauty of the world” . Through a large number of precious first-hand photos, videos and oral accounts, the exhibition presents a comprehensive view of the current state of threatened cultural heritage worldwide, and efforts from the ALIPH foundation to conserve them.
As a country rich in cultural heritage, China was among the first to respond to the initiative led by the ALIPH foundation. Since 2017, China has been playing an active role in the international organization as a founding member state, and has taken concrete actions to safeguard humanity's cultural heritage. The NMC has long been engaged in the work coordinated by the ALIPH foundation's Scientific Committee, while sharing its own expertise in protecting heritage. The NMC is also one of the three international safe havens providing shelter to threatened heritage, with the other two being the Musée du Louvre-Lens in France and the Swiss National Museum .
