The special exhibition A Journey Through Mountains and Rivers: Landscape Imagery and Global Aesthetics in Chinese Export Porcelain was unveiled on June 13 at the Quanzhou Maritime Museum in Fujian Province, China.
The exhibition features more than 120 key items and sets from the museum’s collection, including export porcelain, nautical charts, calligraphy, and paintings. Together, they offer a concentrated view of the global circulation of Chinese porcelain decorated with landscape imagery. Organized into three sections, “Origins and Craftsmanship,” “Orders for Export,” and “Timeless Landscapes,” the exhibition traces the development of landscape-patterned porcelain from kilns including Jingdezhen, Guangcai, Anxi, and Dehua. Moving from traditional craftsmanship to overseas trade and the transmission of cultural imagery, it shows how export porcelain evolved from practical objects into vessels imbued with cultural meaning. It also reveals how, through global trade, these works absorbed Western tastes, adapted their decorative motifs, and responded to the aesthetic preferences of different regions around the world.
The exhibition is open until September 13.
