On January 20, 2021, the Shimao Maritime Silk Road Museum of Fujian opened in Shishi, Quanzhou, Fujian Province, with an opening ceremony themed "Sail on the Silk Road and Build Dreams with Culture". The museum aims to provide a window for cultural exhibitions and exchanges and to promote the Maritime Silk Road civilization.
The museum is a joint outcome of cooperation between the Palace Museum and Shimao Group, in order to explore how state-owned museums may support the private ones. The museum covers an area of 11,482 square meters, with a construction area of 30,718 square meters, including two exhibition halls with the Forbidden City theme and halls with the Maritime Silk Road theme. The museum also opens with several exhibitions, including Watching Ebbs on Boat – History and Culture of the Maritime Silk Road and Delicate Porcelain in Fuliang – Exhibition of Porcelain Antiques Collected in the Palace Museum. Among them, A Journey Through the Silk Road– The Silk Road Landscape Map Digital Art Exhibition focuses on the masterpiece Mountains and Rivers on the Silk Road collected by the Palace Museum, using interactive multimedia to invite the audience to experience the beauty of the Silk Road on land.
