Exhibition of Changsha Wares Opens at Dongguan Museum

On January 23rd, 2021, the "Color and Style of the Tang Dynasty: Exhibition of Masterpiece Ceramics from Changsha Kiln" opened at Dongguan Museum. The exhibition is co-organized by Dongguan Museum and Changsha Museum.

The Changsha kiln is probably the earliest one in the history of Chinese ceramics to fire painted underglaze ceramics. In the context of prosperous, open and inclusive culture of the Tang dynasty, Changsha kiln was not only focused on domestic market, but also boldly absorbed foreign cultural ingredients, innovated decoration technology, and actively explored overseas markets. Changsha wares were exported and sold along the Maritime Silk Road to more than 20 countries and regions in East Asia, Southeast Asia, West Asia and North Africa, becoming world-class best-selling products. The massive underwater discovery of Changsha wares in the "Black Rock" shipwreck around Belitung Island in Indonesia is a critical testimony to the brilliant history of the exportation of Changsha wares in the Tang Dynasty.

The total 186 pieces/sets of ceramics from Changsha kiln of the Tang dynasty presented in the exhibition are all masterpiece collection of the Changsha Museum accumulated through years of archaeological excavations, collection and acquisition. The exhibition aims to enable the visitors to understand the important position of the Changsha kiln in the history of Chinese ceramics, and experience the wonderful color and style of the Tang dynasty on the Maritime Silk Road thousands of years ago through a feast of charming Changsha wares.

The exhibition will last until April 6, 2021.
