Silk Road Online Museum (SROM) Makes Its Debut

On June 18, 2021, the Silk Road Online Museum (SROM) was officially launched at the opening ceremony of the “2021 Silk Road Week”.

Meanwhile, the first fully online 3D exhibition Gathering in the Galaxy: Great Treasures from the Silk Roads, curated with the online curating platform, opened to the public. With 79 artifacts from 47 museums all over the world, the exhibition showcases and promotes cultural exchanges between the East and West with four chapters according to geographical characteristics: “Steppe Silk Road”, “Silk Road of the Desert Oasis”, “Maritime Silk Road” and “Silk Road and the Buddhism”.

The SROM project is an integrated platform aiming to facilitate cooperation among museums along the Silk Road, break limitations due to physical collections or limited space of a museum, and realize exchanges and sharing of online resources, with four distinctive categories, namely “Digital Collection”, “Digital Exhibition”, “Digital Knowledge” and “Online Curating”.

Over 40 museums from 18 countries have joined the project, including the Dunhuang Academy, Fujian Museum, Xi’an Tang West Market Museum, China National Silk Museum, the British Museum, State Historical Museum in Russia, the Gyeongju National Museum in South Korea, the Hirayama Ikuo Silk Road Museum in Japan, the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki in Greece and the National Museum of Antiquities in Tajikistan, etc.
