
On December 31, 2021, the exhibition Exchange and Mutual Learning-the Cosmopolitan Art from Dunhuang Grottoes and the Hexi Corridor opened at the History and Folk Culture Branch of the Shenzhen Museum. The exhibition was sponsored by the Culture, Radio, Television, Tourism and Sports Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality and Gansu Provincial Administration of Cultural Heritage and hosted by the Dunhuang Academy, the Gansu Provincial Museum and the Gansu Jiandu Museum.
The exhibition is divided into 3 sections: “Grotto Art” “Silk Road Splendor” and “Diverse Mortal World”, revealing integration and accomplishment of the Eastern and Western civilizations in Dunhuang and the Hexi Corridor. Gathering essential collection from museums alongside the Hexi Corridor, the exhibition consisted of 130 pieces (sets) of ancient wooden scripts, written scriptures from Dunhuang, wooden sculptures, painted sculptures, silk crafts, gold and silver ware and so on, from the Gansu Provincial Museum and 10 other museums and cultural institutions. Besides, the exhibits include four life-size replicas of the Dunhuang Mogao Cave 45,220,285 and 320, as well as 40 copies of Dunhuang murals and written scriptures, 70 copies of high-fidelity digital murals. In addition, more than 20 auxiliary exhibits, such as imitation canopies and pagodas, present an immersive Mogao Cave perspective for the audience.
Reconstruction of building components and 3D modellings are arranged to showcase the materials and manufacturing process of the Dunhuang murals and painted sculptures. High-fidelity digital mural copies, pagodas, canopies, clothing as auxiliary exhibits provide insightful information about the Mogao Caves art, and help audience experience the creativity of the Chinese civilization as well as aesthetic fashion of today.
The exhibition will last until March 20, 2022.
