China’s First Archaeology Museum Opens in Shaanxi

The Shaanxi Archaeology Museum, China’s first comprehensive museum focusing on archaeology, has been opened to the public on April 28, 2022. This thematic museum houses archaeological discoveries of the Shaanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology in the past six decades, as well as over 200,000 cultural artifacts.

Located in Xi’an, the capital of Shaanxi province, the Shaanxi Archaeology Museum covers a total floor area of 36,000 square meters, with an indoor exhibition space of 5,800 square meters and outdoor exhibition space of 10,000 square meters. It brings modernized still traditional touring and scientific and research environment to audiences and scholars both domestic and abroad. The museum aims to focus on scientific excavation, conservation and utilization and presentation and interpretation. It becomes a trailblazer in the systematic reform of China’s archaeological institutions, and contributes a “Shaanxi plan” to China’s archaeology development in the new era.
