On July 2, 2022, the long-awaited Hong Kong Palace Museum (HKPM), a collaboration between the Hong Kong West Kowloon Cultural District Authority and the Palace Museum, opened to the public, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to the motherland.

Several opening exhibitions were launched to display over 900 valuable artifacts and artworks from the collection of the Palace Museum. The exhibitions, including Entering the Forbidden City: Collection, Architecture and Heritage, Clay to Treasure: Ceramics from the Palace Museum Collection, introduce the Forbidden City in the Ming and Qing dynasties and the court life in the Qing dynasty. Two major special exhibitions of The Making of Masterpieces: Chinese Painting and Calligraphy from the Palace Museum and Grand Gallop: Art and Culture of the Horse present the finest and rarest Chinese paintings and calligraphies from the Palace Museum and highlight the significance of the horse in both Chinese and world cultures. In addition to the Palace Museum collection, HKPM also displays 13 important artworks loaned from the Louvre Museum in Paris to testify exchanges between China and other civilizations. The opening exhibitions also feature Hong Kong-themed exhibitions to re-interpret the culture and collection of the Forbidden City from a new perspective.

Hong Kong is a key node on the Maritime Silk Road, serving as an important gateway toward countries along the Belt and Road. The HKPM aims to promote the study and appreciation of Chinese art and culture and foster dialogue among world civilizations. It will enable Hong Kong people to take a closer view of precious cultural relics, appreciate the richness of Chinese traditional culture, and enhance their cultural confidence in Hong Kong’s prosperity.
