A Comprehensive Collection of Ancient Chinese Paintings Presented at the National Museum of China

        Compilation of Classics in the Flourishing Age: The Exhibition of Achievements in Compiling “A Comprehensive Collection of Ancient Chinese Paintings” opens on September 29, 2022 at the National Museum of China. This exhibition is co-hosted by the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, the National Press and Publication Administration, the CPC Zhejiang Provincial Committee and the Zhejiang Provincial People’s Government.

        Ancient Chinese paintings are some of the finest treasures from traditional Chinese culture. A Comprehensive Collection of Ancient Chinese Paintings features 12,405 Chinese paintings (sets) sourced from 263 Chinese and international museums and cultural institutions. They are painted on a variety of materials including paper, silk (brocade and damask) and linen. The exhibition encompasses the majority of extant traditional Chinese paintings that have been categorised as “national treasures”, including A Collection of Pre-Qin, Han and Tang Dynasties Paintings, A Collection of Song Dynasty Paintings, A Collection of Yuan Dynasty Paintings, A Collection of Ming Dynasty Paintings and A Collection of Qing Dynasty Paintings, totalling 226 books in 60 volumes. These publications on the finest Chinese paintings are considered the most comprehensive and most extensive illustrated archives of their kind to date.

        This exhibition consists of three parts: “A Legacy Passed Down Through Generations”, “Ancient Art, Global Treasures” and “Innovation and Transformation Without Borders”, showcasing a remarkable treasure trove of ancient Chinese paintings through images, text, videos and new media. A vivid reflection of the development history of Chinese art, the 1,700+ publishing proofs of ancient paintings on display are a gathering of Chinese art treasures from domestic collections as well as those scattered around the world.
