Greek Relics from the British Museum on Show at Suzhou Museum

Ancient Greeks: Athletes, Warriors and Heroes—a major exhibition of Greek relics from the British Museum opened at the Suzhou Museum on December 25, 2022. The exhibition consists of 177 exquisite relics that reveal the competitive spirit of the Greeks in sport, performance arts, military equipment and other aspects. It is worth mentioning that five artifacts from the Mausoleum at Halikarnassos will be on display for the first time in an international touring exhibition. The mausoleum is the tomb of king Mausolus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Through the 177 relics from the British Museum, the exhibition illustrates various aspects of the Greek spirit of competition, including childhood games, sports, performing arts, military equipment and mausoleum decorations. These artifacts, ranging from a red-figure amphora of two boys playing knucklebones, the marble sculpture of a young discus thrower, a magnificent myrtle wreath, to a set of exquisitely-crafted bronze armor, all provide visitors with a vivid experience of the positive value and profound impact that the spirit of “contest” has had on Greek culture.

The exhibition is open until February 25, 2024.
