As China’s first digital art museum, the Tianjin Digital Art Museum officially opened to the public on May 18th to coincide with International Museum Day. Built in 1931, the museum building was formerly the Municipal Board of the French concession area of Tianjin. It was the largest administrative building of all French Concessions in China after the mid-19th century, and is the best preserved and most elegant of extant administrative buildings among the former foreign concessions in Tianjin.
The museum’s permanent exhibitions consist of the digital acquisition, production and display of renowned cultural relics and heritage sites from Tianjin, such as the Tianjin Museum, the Tianjin section of the Grand Canal, Dule Temple, and the Great Wall at Huangyaguan. Through digitization, the Tianjin Digital Art Museum has recreated cultural heritage sites such as the old city of Tianjin, allowing visitors to experience Tianjin’s historical and cultural charms up close.
The special digital exhibition, The World of Van Gogh , made its public debut on the museum’s opening day. The exhibition creates an immersive audio-visual feast for visitors by presenting the artistic world of the Dutch post-impressionist painter through 360-degree panoramic holographic projection technology.
Jin Peng, the museum’s director, expressed that the digital museum can seamlessly navigate between different themes and settings because it is not constrained by physical space. It is incredibly convenient for viewing exhibitions and museum collections, as well as participating in discussions and educational activities. The digital museum can also offer visitors a more diverse and engaging experience by enabling them to explore history and art through immersive interactions.
