Fifth Shanghai Archaeology Forum Kicks Off in Shanghai

 

The Fifth Shanghai Archaeology Forum was held on December 15,2023 at Shanghai University. Over 200 experts and scholars from over 40 countries and regions gathered at the forum and engaged in in-depth discussions on the theme of the “Archaeology of Climate Change and Social Sustainability”.

The forum recognized major field archaeological discoveries, important achievements in archaeological researches, and granted lifetime achievement awards to pre-eminent archeologists with outstanding academic contributions. Professor Yan Wenming from Peking University received the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s forum, marking the first time a Chinese scholar receiving this prestigious award. Nine major field discoveries have been recognized, including China’s Sanxingdui Site in Guanghan, Sichuan province, and the Cave Paintings of Serranía de la Lindosa in the Colombian Amazon. Ten important achievements in archaeological research have also been acknowledged, including A Centennial History of Chinese Archaeology (1921–2021).

To uphold the vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind, and to draw upon historical lessons and wisdom in addressing climate change, participating experts engaged in in-depth discussions on several key topics, including the theories and methods of the archaeology of climate change and social sustainability, the role of cultural diversity and local knowledge in climate adaptation, the rise and fall of civilizations and climate change, and the impact of climate change on cultural heritage.

The Shanghai Archaeology Forum is held biennially and serves as a platform for top-tier academic exchange within the international community for archaeology. Its objectives include the promotion of archaeological research, the dissemination of archaeological accomplishments and to present the contemporary significance of historical and cultural heritage.
