Exhibition on Textiles for Silk Clothing from Suzhou Opens in Venice

Special exhibition, The Axis of Time. Textiles for Silk Clothing from Suzhou, opened in Venice on January 10, 2024. The exhibition is organized by the Suzhou Silk Museum and the Museum of Palazzo Mocenigo, and sponsored by the Suzhou Municipal Bureau for Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism, the Foreign Affairs Office of the Suzhou Municipal People’s Government, the Suzhou Radio and Television Media Group (Main Station), National Committee to Commemorate Marco Polo, Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, Confucius Institute at Ca’ Foscari University Venice, and the organizing committee of the Carnevale di Venezia. The exhibition opens until February 23.
2024 marks the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo’s death. To commemorate the occasion, the City of Venice has established a national committee for the event and organized a series of festivities. As the first major event in the celebrations, the exhibition will let Venetians and international visitors experience Suzhou’s remarkable silk culture and retrace the footsteps of Marco Polo through the silk costumes and textiles of Suzhou.
The exhibition showcases the types, styles and craftsmanship of Suzhou’s silk costumes and textiles from the mid-10th century to the present. The display of these exhibits in the beautiful Museum of Palazzo Mocenigo on the occasion of Marco Polo’s 700th anniversary creates a captivating story that testifies to the friendship and cultural exchanges between Suzhou and Venice.
