The exhibition La Belle in the Northern Land: Unearthed Relics of Women in Liao Dynasty Collected by Inner Mongolia Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology opened at China’s Suzhou Museum on March 30.
The exhibition highlights the elegant lives of aristocratic women from the Liao dynasty (916–1125 CE) in northern China. All exhibits come from the collections of China’s Inner Mongolia Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, primarily consisting of artifacts excavated from the tomb of Chen State’s Princess in 1986, the tomb of aristocrat women in the Tuerji Mountain in 2003, and the tomb of imperial concubine of Emperor Shengzong of Liao Dynasty in 2015.
Organized into three parts, “The Golden Hairpins of Beautiful Ladies”, “Precious Delicacies on Expensive Extravagant Jade Plates” and “Hunting in All Seasons as a Way of Life”, the exhibition showcases over a hundred exquisite pieces (sets), encompassing gold and silverware, bronzes, jade, lacquerware, agate, amber, crystal, glass and ceramics.
The exhibition is jointly planned and organized by the Inner Mongolia Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and the Suzhou Museum. Open until June 30, it is the first exhibition of unearthed relics from the Institute’s collection in nearly 20 years.
