Co-hosted by the National Museum of China and the Embassy of the Republic of Italy in China, the exhibition Caravaggio's World of Art opened to the public on November 8 at the National Museum of China.
Focusing on Caravaggio’s masterpiece Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy, the exhibition offers an immersive experience of the world of Caravaggio through the lens of art conservators. Divided into three parts: “The Awakening of Light” “Restoration Time: Workshop” and “Bridging Cultures Through Dialogue Between China and Italy Artifacts”, it explores both the historical and modern dimensions of his works, highlighting the beauty of restoration, rebirth and cultural exchange.
The exhibition also employs virtual reality(VR) technology to create immersive experiences of works such as Saint Jerome Writing, Boy with a Basket of Fruit, and Young Sick Bacchus, helping visitors delve deeper into Caravaggio’s art and the era he lived in.
By emphasizing the importance of art restoration, the exhibition highlights not only the preservation of physical artworks but also provides the opportunity to uncover their deeper meanings. Conservation and restoration efforts enhance our understanding of art and expand its reach. They revitalize the ethos of the artist’s vision, offering significant value for both research and cultural enrichment.
The exhibition is open until the end of March 2025.
