Oriental Art Gallery Opens at National Museum of Art of Romania

The Oriental Art Gallery, a new permanent exhibition at the National Museum of Art of Romania (MNAR) opened on November 22.
The exhibition includes close to 600 objects from China, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Russia, Egypt, Greece, India, Iran, Japan, Syria, Turkey, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, selected by the museum from existing collections in the country.
The section presenting Chinese art provides an overview of the evolution of artistic genres from the end of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) to the first half of the 20th century. The selection of paintings, sculptures, textiles, as well as ceramics, jade, cloisonné objects and lacquerware illustrate the various styles of court and folk art. The space dedicated to Islamic art showcases items made between the 7th and 20th centuries, includes carpets, costumes, embroideries, ceramics, metal items, and weapons, revealing the mutual influence of artistic practices and the common features. The halls dedicated to Japanese art present defining objects of Japanese culture from the 17th to 20th centuries, from the Edo, Meiji and Taisho eras, such as ukiyoe, sculptures, bronzeware, ceramics, ivory and armors. This section also includes a tea ceremony room.
This new exhibition offers the opportunity to explore and understand more deeply oriental culture, thus facilitating the understanding between diverse traditions and aesthetic visions.
