On August 21, China’s National Centre for Archaeology and the Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Alexandria, Egypt, to strengthen cooperation on maritime archaeology and underwater cultural heritage. The agreement sets out plans for extensive collaboration and exchange in areas such as joint research, cultural exchange, information sharing, and professional training programs.
Under the memorandum, China and Egypt will jointly establish a China–Egypt Center for Maritime Archaeology and Underwater Cultural Heritage in Alexandria. The center will promote cooperation in underwater archaeology, heritage conservation and related research, while also fostering cultural exchange and mutual learning between the two civilizations. Joint underwater archaeological excavations will provide vital evidence for studying the Maritime Silk Road, offering a vivid example of dialogue and exchange between China and Egypt.
This collaboration in underwater archaeology will bring the peoples of both nations closer together, enrich the content of their comprehensive strategic partnership, and lay a solid foundation for building a China–Egypt community with a shared future in the new era.
