The special exhibition Golden Thread: The Art of Dressing from North Africa to East Asia made its public debut at the Chengdu Museum in China on November 30. Jointly organized by the Chengdu Museum and the Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac, it marks the first stop on the exhibition’s global tour—and the only stop in China.
Centered on the theme of “golden threads”, the exhibition showcases more than 200 pieces (sets) of gold-woven garments and accessories from seven French cultural institutions, including the Musée du Quai Branly - Jacques Chirac, France’s National Archaeological Museum, National Museum of Natural History, and the Musée des Confluences. It also features precious artifacts from eight Chinese museums and cultural institutions, such as the China National Silk Museum, the Liaoning Provincial Museum, the Gansu Provincial Museum, and the Qinghai Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology. Supplemented by the latest archaeological findings, the exhibition offers visitors a grand artistic feast filled with color and opulence.
The exhibition explores gold-weaving traditions from diverse regions and cultures through five thematic sections, “The Radiance of Sunsets: The Bright Attire of the Maghreb,” “Starry Skies over a Sea of Sand: Gold-Weaving Arts of the Middle East,” “Threads of Devotion: The Aesthetics of Faith on the Arabian Peninsula,” “Fragrant Silks: Golden Garments of India and Southeast Asia” and “Glittering Warps and Wefts: Golden Memories from the Land of Silk.”
The exhibition is open until March 29, 2026.
