I. The Second Executive Council Meeting of the International Alliance of Museums of the Silk Road Held in Beijing
In accordance with the Statutes of the International Alliance of Museums of the Silk Road (IAMS), the IAMS Second Executive Council Meeting was held at the National Museum of China on December 4, 2019. Sixteen people attended the meeting, including the IAMS President, Secretary General, representatives from eight Vice-President member units, and special observers from the Bureau of International Exchange and Cooperation of the Chinese Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
At the meeting, the Executive Council approved that Liu Wanming, Deputy Director of the National Museum of China, would take over the role of Secretary General of IAMS. The Executive Council also voted and approved three international museums to join the IAMS. The Secretary General gave a presentation on the work of IAMS in 2019, reviewed the IAMS website construction, membership development and conferences, and exhibitions and personnel exchange activities within the IAMS framework, including two conferences/academic seminars held in China, three exhibitions held in China, two international travelling exhibitions and one professional exchange programme.
The Executive Council discussed and agreed to hold the Second IAMS Conference and the Third Executive Council Meeting in Beijing in September 2020, during which academic seminars on the subjects of "Women and the Belt and Road: History, Art and Modernization", "Dialogue between the East and the West in the Age of Exploration", "Preservation and Conservation of Silk Road Heritage", "Space Design in Museums", etc. In the meeting, the representatives also discussed and determined nine key work projects of the IAMS in 2020.
All the attendants in the meeting signed the Memorandum on the IAMS Second Executive Council Meeting and witnessed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the National Museum of China and National Museum in Belgrade and The National Museum of China and the National Museum in Belgrade Letter of Intent on Exhibition Cooperation within the IAMS framework.
II. New Members Joined IAMS
The IAMS Secretariat is actively contacting and inviting new members to join the Alliance. The IAMS Executive Council voted and accepted three museums to join the Alliance: the Lichtenstein National Museum, the Hungarian National Museum and the Rundāle Palace Museum, Latvia. Thus, the total number of IAMS members has increased to 161, including 50 international institutions and 111 Chinese institutions.
III. Professional Exchange Programme among IAMS Members Carried Out in Beijing
From December 2 to 6, professional exchange among IAMS members was undertaken at the National Museum of China. Representatives from four Vice-President member units, including the National Museums of History of Azerbaijan, the National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the National Museum of Myanmar and the National Museum in Belgrade, Serbia had in-depth discussions with professionals from the National Museum of China in the fields of acquisition, conservation, collection digitalization and international exhibition cooperation. The exchange programme leads to the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the National Museum of China and National Museum in Belgrade and The National Museum of China and the National Museum in Belgrade Letter of Intent on Exhibition Cooperation within the IAMS framework.
