The Museum of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (Guangxi Museum for short) reopened on November 28th, 2022.
First established in 1934, the Guangxi Museum is a provincial-level comprehensive museum combing history and art. It has been rated as a first-grade national museum in China’s first patch of grading and evaluation of museums, with almost 100,000 items (sets) in its collection. After renovation and expansion, the museum increased from 21,000 square meters to 37,000 square meters in size, including approx. 10,000 square meters of exhibition space. Following the principle of “building the new in the footsteps of the original”, the new museum building is able to effectively balance upgrades in quality with the preservation of the city’s historical and cultural memory. Integrating classical landscapes reminiscent of the past, leisure and cultural space, and modern scientific design into one, the new building radiates the vitality of a composite cultural institution and museum entity, and re-emerges as a new urban cultural landmark.
Special exhibitions currently on display include Guangxi’s Ancient Civilisations, Flames of War in Southern China—The Contemporary Revolutionary History of Guangxi, Voyages from Hepu—Guangxi’s Maritime Silk Road from the Han Dynasty, Colourful Glazes— Ceramic Ware from the Museum Collection, Resplendent Craftsmanship—Selected Arts and Crafts from the Museum Collection and more. These exhibits illustrate the tale of Guangxi’s development within the pattern of diversity in unity of the Chinese civilisation from multiple angles.
Focusing on the adoption and application of recent scientific testing and academic research on cultural relics, Voyages from Hepu—Guangxi’s Maritime Silk Road from the Han Dynasty illustrates Guangxi’s unique historical status in the development of the ancient Maritime Silk Road, and the core Silk Road spirit characterised by “peace and cooperation, openness and inclusiveness, mutual learning, and mutual benefit”.
