Exhibition of Chinese Han Dynasty Treasures Opens in Hungary

Jointly organized by the Shanghai Museum, Xuzhou Museum and Chengdu Archaeological Institute, the exhibition Treasures of Ancient China: The Age of the Jade Emperors opened on June 24, 2023 at the Móra Ferenc Museum in Hungary, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative. As the first exhibition of the Shanghai Museum’s A History of China in 100 Objects global tour, the opening also coincided with Hungary’s Museum Day. To celebrate the occasion, the Móra Ferenc Museum remained open until midnight, attracting nearly ten thousand visitors to experience the charms of traditional Chinese culture on the exhibition’s opening day.

The exhibition features 111 pieces (sets) selected treasures from China’s Han dynasty (202BCE–220CE), including jade, lacquerware, ceramics, bronze, seals, stone engravings, coins and others. The Han Dynasty of ancient China is known for its national strength, economic prosperity and cultural flourishment. As the starting point of the ancient Silk Road, itechoed with the Roman Empire on the other side of the Eurasian continent. Spanning thousands of miles, the Silk Road established during the Han dynasty continues to be a vital conduit for economic and cultural exchanges between China and its neighbouring countries today.

The exhibition is divided into four sections: “The Art of Life,” “The Wisdom of Harmony,” “The Light of Faith” and “The Prosperity of the Silk Road.” Through intuitive displays, the exhibition vividly presents the politics, economy and culture of China’s golden age from multiple angles. It explores the cultural legacy of the Chinese civilization and fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation for ancient Chinese art and culture among international audiences.

The exhibition is expected to tour multiple countries after its closure on December 31, 2023.
