
The exhibition The Meeting of Chinese and Western Art: Nineteenth-Century Images of Guangdong and Macao in the Context of the Maritime Silk Road and the associated academic symposium opened at the CAFA Art Museum in Beijing on March 14, 2024.
The exhibition is a project funded by the China National Arts Fund 2023. It will go on tour across China, with the CAFA Art Museum serving as the first out of five stops. The exhibition is hosted by the Macau University of Science and Technology and organized by the university’s Faculty of Humanities and Arts.
The exhibition primarily features 129 Chinese export paintings from the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art Yinchuan and 80 maps of Macao and Guangdong from the collections of the Macao University of Science and Technology Library. it provides a panoramic and immersive view of the urban landscapes and historical transformations of the trading ports of Macao and Guangzhou, highlighting their significance as vital nodes along the Maritime Silk Road in the 19th century.
The academic symposium features speeches from 13 Chinese and international guests on topics such as “Artistic Exchanges between China and the West”, “Western-influenced paintings” and “The History of Macao”.
