The exhibition Life’s Pleasures: Scenes of Everyday Life in Ming and Qing Paintings opened at the Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum on March 15.
The exhibition has been jointly organized by the Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum and the Tianjin Museum. Focusing on the everyday lives of ancient Chinese people, the exhibition showcases scenes that depict their daily activities, tastes and interests in three parts:“Home is Where the Heart Is”(local customs),“A Life of Leisure Amidst Mist and Rain” (leisurely pursuits of the Chinese literati) and “Vicissitudes of Life” (social change). These sections provide a comprehensive view of everyday life during the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368–1911), encompassing festivities, leisure activities, material production and everyday objects.
The exhibition features artworks by renowned Chinese artists, including Dong Qichang, Chen Hongshou, Shi Tao, Shen Zhou, Wen Zhengming, Tang Yin, Yun Shouping, Lan Ying, Huang Shen and Hua Yan. Among the exhibits is Ten Thousand Tablets of an Imperial Audience —a national treasure from the Tianjin Museum’s collection that depicts Qianlong Emperor’s tour of Suzhou in southeastern China. This marks the painting’s public debut outside of Tianjin, making the appearance exceptionally precious.
The exhibition is open until May 20.
