As part of the Silk Road Bazar handicraft exhibition in Samarkand, the city was awarded World Craft City status by the World Crafts Council (WCC). At the event, Saad Al-Qaddumi, President of the World Crafts Council, Rasuljon Mirzaahmedov, Chairman of the Hunarmand Association of Uzbekistan, and Rustam Qobilov, Samarkand Region’s Deputy Hokim, highlighted that the recognition reflects the long-standing traditions and values of Samarkand craftsmanship.
This craftsmanship is deeply connected to the city’s history as a key point on the ancient great Silk Road and also shows great respect for the efforts of contemporary artisans.In 2019, the Hunarmand Association of Uzbekistan joined the World Crafts Council, expanding opportunities for Uzbek artisans to engage in international exhibitions, competitions, and collaborations.
The Council awarded Kokand the title of World Craft City in 2019, followed by Bukhara and Margilan in 2022, and Rishtan, Shahrikhon, and Shahrisabz in 2025. Recently, Samarkand became the seventh city of Uzbekistan to attain this status. Currently, 83 cities worldwide are recognized as World Craft Cities.The World Craft City status opens up new avenues for tourism, investments, and showcasing local handicraft products globally.
