Exhibition on Western Silverware Opens at Hangzhou Museum

The exhibition Feast: The Liang Yi Museum Silver Collection from the 18th to 20th Century debuted at the Hangzhou Museum in China on March 18, 2023. The exhibition is hosted by the Hangzhou Municipal Bureau of Gardening and Cultural Relics and jointly organised by the Hangzhou Museum and Hong Kong’s Liang Yi Museum.

Centred on the theme of “feasts”, the exhibition showcases 374 pieces (80 sets) of European silverware from the collection of the Liang Yi Museum, and more than 30 pieces of rare cultural relics from the collection of the Hangzhou Museum. The exhibition is divided into 5 sections: Silverware and the Grand Dining of the European Ancien Régime, Silverware and the New Bourgeoisie, Silverware and Social Identities, Silverware and the History of Decorative Arts and “Candle Tree“and European Candelabra Culture. Recreations of original settings are interwoven into the main exhibition line. The exhibition chronicles the changes in European society and aesthetic tastes over the past two centuries, highlights the contrast between material cultures over time and across borders, and reflects on the connections between Chinese and western art and culture from the perspective of mutual learnings between China and the West.

The exhibition is open until July 16, 2023.
